I teach BMI 6030 Foundations of Bioinformatics, in the fall. I also teach classes and labs in other courses offered in BMI and other departments. I facilitate Case-based learning for first-year med students in the Foundations of Medicine course in the fall. I also sometimes lead journal clubs in BMI and have sometimes offered biomedical data visualization and advanced genome analysis. My teaching philosophy centers around synthesis rather than memorization. This comment came from a student after completing the BMI comprehensive exam, “It really was the section that caused me to think the most and to regurgitate the least.
In the School of Medicine, I co-direct Host and Defense to first-year med students. This intense 9-week course covers infectious disease, immunology, and some pharmacy.
